     In Window Film Industry

As we celebrate Women’s History Month this March, Accent Distributing joined the International Window Film Association in also honoring Women in Window Film.

Accent Distributing, a 3M™ Authorized Distributor, knows first-hand the difference that women are making in the window film industry. Accent Distributing’s staff works daily with women who are successfully running operations, surpassing business goals and installing thousands of rolls of window film for automobile, commercial and residential customers in their communities.

Here is a look at four women making a difference within this traditionally male-dominated industry.

Dawn Hurley, Territory Manager, Accent Distributing

Dawn has been in the window film industry since she was “knee-high to a grasshopper.” She remembers conducting elementary school science fair projects inside a Martin Processing manufacturing plant (which would later become part of the Eastman Company). Her father, at the time, was the onsite plant manager. After college, Dawn launched a 30-year career after college in window film sales, management and marketing. She joined Accent Distributing’s team as a sales manager in 2019.

    Her favorite part?
“I have always enjoyed working with dealers to help them reach their goals. I’ve worked one-on-one with businesses, even trained sales teams for companies.  My favorite part is watching new sales managers close their first jobs, watching them make a new relationship fruitful, and seeing that light bulb go off that they can and do, indeed, earn a fantastic living with this career path. It’s all about support, loyalty and relationships. It’s about helping each other succeed. That’s a good cycle of business.”

Advice for women who want to work in window film?
“Come on in! The women I’ve had the pleasure of working with excel in business, sales, and installation. On the installation side of our industry, women are fabulous and pick up the techniques easily.  We tend to have smaller hands allowing for more dexterity on difficult installations both automotive and flat glass. We also have patience to complete difficult jobs.

All women have had to develop a heightened level of perseverance – whether in this industry or any other. It’s that level of perseverance that allow us to pursue our goals regardless of setbacks or roadblocks. So basically, my advice is just do it!  There is nothing that can stop you when you set your spirit to it.  It’s not about getting knocked down (we all get knocked down), it’s about how you get up!  Drown out the ‘noise’ (there will be lots of noise) with your own brand of positive energy each day.  This industry like many others needs strong female leaders, businesswomen, sale managers and installers and I’m so proud to be part of that movement.”

Michelle Gadient, President, JAG Window Tinting & Treatments, Inc.

Michelle’s husband, James, began working as a one-man-shop in Indiana in 1993. They met in 2008 and moved to Florida in 2013 where they opened their business. As JAG Window Tinting & Treatments continued to see steady growth, Michelle left her career in the Pharmaceutical industry and joined her husband to put her education and corporate experience to use in their company. “We became officially a woman-owned company in May of 2019,” Michelle said. “My main focus has been growth strategy and networking for large commercial opportunities and strategic partnerships.”

    Her favorite part?
“I enjoy all the innovative products 3M offers and continues to roll out year after year. Making a difference for a customer, whether it be saving them money, protecting them or beautifying their property is truly satisfying. These innovative products along with our great team of employees, allow JAG to grow and prosper.”

Advice for women who want to work in window film?
“Don’t be afraid to go for it! While traditionally a male dominated field, a woman’s perspective adds a level of intuition, empathy and nurturing that can bring true value to any window film company.”

Nancy Nardone, President, Tint Spec, Arlington, TX

Nancy grew up in the window film industry. Her father started working with window film in the 1980s. When she was younger, she worked at his company in Houston and learned his business inside and out. After graduating college in 2013, Nancy began working full-time for her dad. She led the opening of a second location in the Dallas/Fort Worth area and re-branded the company Tint Spec.

    Her favorite part?
“My favorite part is the people you get to meet and the friends that turn into family, inside and outside of the industry. This window film industry is built by hard working, motivated and passionate individuals who care for one another and truly want each other to succeed.”

Advice for women who want to work in window film?
“As I am starting to see more and more women in window film industry, all I have to say is, ‘Let’s go girls!’ There is so much opportunity and so many different markets to grow in this industry. My advice is to talk to as many people as you can. Everyone in the industry has always been very open and helpful, and I have learned so much from my colleagues and peers, and… maybe a little bit from my Dad!”

Cynthia Walter, Owner/Installation and Sales, Applied Window Films, LLC

Cynthia began working full-time in the window film industry in 1992 in Grand Rapids, MI. “With three small children at home, it was a difficult decision to give up my day care business and join Tom in the tinting business, but the pay-off down the road proved to be well worth it. At that time, we took on 3M film exclusively and within a year, we were a 3M Premier Dealer. In 2000, we moved to Melbourne FL and have had consistent growth in this market.” She and her husband own Applied Window Films, LLC.

    Her favorite part?
“I enjoy helping customers solve their issues with the Florida sun and creating a beautiful result. The technology today has advanced so much, there are so many options to tailor any tint job to meet customers’ needs and expectations. In the last few years, my decorative film installations have taken off. Whether it is a bathroom window or an office complex, I love creating unique and attractive applications for my customers.”

Advice for women who want to work in window film?
“Twenty-eight years ago it was a different landscape for a woman in the film industry. My advice would be to become and stay knowledgeable in all aspects of the field. Always listen to the customer first and be sincere. And never be daunted by the customer who looks over your shoulder and says, ‘Where’s the man?’ We can do it all!”
